“Warabi Ashibi” – Children at Play

“Warabi Ashibi” is an Okinawan term meaning “children at play,” and is the name for the anticipated cultural summer program of the Hawaii United Okinawa Association.

First established in 1996 on Oahu, this program was designed to provide a fun and educational experience for children, while learning about our Okinawan culture in a day camp atmosphere. In 2001, HUOA received a grant from the State of Hawaii – State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, which allowed HUOA to expand this program to the neighbor islands. Camps co-sponsored and organized by our neighbor island clubs allowed the program to expand to Kauai, Maui and Hawaii.

These past two years, COVID-19 has forced the Children Camps to rethink the operation of their individual programs. This year, 2022, the future of the camps was based on the assessments made by their organizing team. Programs participating in-person will involve less children and staff, with a modified program. We hope you will be able to join us again.
