Hui Okinawa will hold its Summer Festival on Saturday, Aug. 18, in the new Sangha Hall at the Hilo Hongwanji Mission. The festival, which runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., will feature ethnic food, cultural entertainment and a craft fair. Okinawan food products and other treats made by club members will be sold in the Hui Okinawa General Store.

The entertainment program will include a taiko performance by the Taishoji Taiko; a mixed entertainment program by the Big Island Culture Club; hula by Kamana Seniors; Japanese exercising and line dancing; a variety show organized by Afuso-ryu Hawaii Sandaa Kai’s Grant Murata Sensei featuring Young Okinawans of Hawaii and Carolyn and Marlene Shimamura; and the Big Island Karaoke Club. A performance by Hui Okinawa’s new eisa students, who are being taught by Murata Sensei, will bring the day to a festive close.

The Summer Festival is being chaired by Hui Okinawa member Carolyn Oki. Proceeds from the festival support Hui Okinawa’s major activities, including its shinnen enkai and keirokai, the Okinawan student exchange program, Graduates’ Night, summer picnic, Haari Boat race, and bonenkai and awards program.
